Nelly Tallies a Whopping 716,650 Copies in First Week Sales And Sets New Record for Most Spins of Any Artist at Rap Radio
Universal Records, the full service recording company which was founded in 1995 by Universal Music Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Doug Morris, scored the #1 record in the country this week as rap impresario
Nelly moved 716,650 copies of his highly-anticipated sophomore effort,
Nellyville.
Moreover, the label beat competitors many times its size to achieve the biggest weekly market share of current albums by any music company with 12.78% for the week ending June 30. (source: SoundScan).
The stunning performance was buttressed by
Nelly’s new single - the summer anthem “Hot In Herre” - which is #1 on the Rap, R&B, Rhythmic Top 40, Top 40 Mainstream and Crossover radio charts. Moreover, “Hot In Herre” made history by being the most played record at rap radio, clocking in an unprecedented 7000 spins within its first week and beating out the previous record holder Ja Rule.
“
Nelly’s growing mainstream appeal is a direct reflection of his artistry and the solid teamwork of our staff,” stated Mel Lewinter, Chairman of Universal/Motown Records Group. “It goes without saying that today’s market is extremely difficult, and to debut with such extraordinary sales is a real achievement.”
“We knew that in
Nelly we were working with a tremendous talent,” commented Monte Lipman, President of Universal Records. “And add to that the incredible A&R work of Kevin Law (Vice President, A&R, Universal Records) and of our staff led by Jean Riggins (Executive Vice President/General Manager, Universal Records), this #1 debut is a gratifying and incredible start to what we believe to be one of the best music stories of the year.”
Nellyville is the rapper’s follow-up to his 8x platinum debut smash Country Grammar, and features appearances by *NSYNC singer Justin
Timberlake, Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child, and the St. Lunatics, as well as production by Basement Beats and the Neptunes. Fans who purchase
Nellyville gain access to a special backstage VIP area on
www.nelly.net to play the new
Nellyville videogame, and watch and listen to exclusive footage. Some of the other treats include the never-before-seen St. Lunatics video, “Let Me In,” two remixes of “Hot In Herre,” and the ability to pre-order tickets for
